5 Social Media Myths Debunked
Social Media Myth- The more fans you have, the better your campaign
Some people get discouraged if they don’t have as many followers as their competitor, however, the total amount of followers is not always a way to measure your success. You must think quality not quantity when considering your fans.
You could have 50 fans that are genuinely interested in your company. Or you could have 150 fans that are unfocused and not beneficial to your business. Which group of fans do you think would be easier to convert to a customer? So remember this when you are recruiting followers. Don’t be in such a hurry to follow anyone, just so that they will follow you back. Sometimes less is more.
Social Media Myth- You only need the “Big Three”
Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are a good start if you are a social media rookie, but soon you will need to move on to bigger and better things. By bigger and better things I mean signing up for 50 social media sites or more. Yes, there are that many, in fact there are hundreds of them. Although some smaller sites are not as popular as Facebook and Twitter, they may be more focused in your niche market.
Social Media Myth- Social Media is Free Marketing
Well it depends on how you look at it. It is true that it may be free to sign up to most social media sites. But how much is your time worth? To run a successful campaign, you must be ready to devote time and effort. This is not meant to be discouraging. I just want to make sure that you are ready to commit. If your last campaign failed and you only posted once in a great while, then it probably failed because there wasn’t enough time invested.
Social Media Myth- Negative comments could ruin my business
It is a common fear for business owners to totally “put it all out there”. They are worried that a company blog can allow an unhappy customer to be heard by the whole world. Let’s face it we can’t make everyone happy and even the best businesses have a dissatisfied customer every now and then. That doesn’t mean you want poor reviews on your blog. But, the truth is having a blog might help you identify problems before customer shares their bad experience with friends and family, on their facebook. Not to mention you will be able to hear customer feedback good and bad.
Social Media Myth- Social Media can replace traditional marketing strategies
Don’t think of social media marketing as a replacement for all of your other marketing, think of it more like an enhancement. Social media is a tool that allows you to reach a larger amount of people than traditional advertising.
Don’t forget to market your social media offline. Include your social media urls on business cards, letterhead, mailers, brochures, and other marketing materials.
